Eyetracking reveals multiple-category use in induction.

چکیده
Category information is used to predict properties of new category members. When categorization is uncertain, people often rely on only one, most likely category to make predictions. Yet studies of perception and action often conclude that people combine multiple sources of information near-optimally. We present a perception-action analog of category-based induction using eye movements as a measure of prediction. The categories were objects of different shapes that moved in various directions. Experiment 1 found that people integrated information across categories in predicting object motion. The results of Experiment 2 suggest that the integration of information found in Experiment 1 were not a result of explicit strategies. Experiment 3 tested the role of explicit categorization, finding that making a categorization judgment, even an uncertain one, stopped people from using multiple categories in our eye-movement task. Experiment 4 found that induction was indeed based on category-level predictions rather than associations between object properties and directions. (PsycINFO Database Record

Eyetracking as an Implicit Measure of Category-Based Induction
Category information is used to predict unknown properties of category members. Previous research has found that when categorization is uncertain, property predictions do not reflect integration of information across categories as normative principles and Bayesian models would suggest. Rather, people often base their predictions on only the most likely category and disregard information from le...
متن کاملUncertainty in category-based induction: when do people integrate across categories?
Two experiments investigated how people perform category-based induction for items that have uncertain categorization. Whereas normative considerations suggest that people should consider multiple relevant categories, much past research has argued that people focus on only the most likely category. A new method is introduced in which responses on individual trials can be classified as using sin...
متن کاملKnowledge Effect and Selective Attention in Category Learning: An Eyetracking Study
Two experiments tested the effect of prior knowledge on attention allocation in category learning. Using eyetracking, we found that (a) knowledge affects dimensional attention allocation, with knowledge-relevant features being fixated more often than irrelevant ones, (b) this effect was not due to initial attention bias to the relevant dimensions but rather gradually emerged in response to obse...
متن کاملEyetracking and selective attention in category learning.
An eyetracking version of the classic Shepard, Hovland, and Jenkins (1961) experiment was conducted. Forty years of research has assumed that category learning often involves learning to selectively attend to only those stimulus dimensions useful for classification. We confirmed that participants learned to allocate their attention optimally. We also found that learners tend to fixate all stimu...

An eyetracking study testing D. L. Medin and M. M. Schaffer's (1978) 5-4 category structure was conducted. Over 30 studies have shown that the exemplar-based generalized context model (GCM) usually provides a better quantitative account of 5-4 learning data as compared with the prototype model. However, J. D. Smith and J. P. Minda (2000) argued that the GCM is a psychologically implausible acco...
